Thailand Facing Zika Virus Outbreak
Virus Detected in Tourists and Locals
Zika is a virus that is spread mainly by the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms of Zika are similar to those of dengue and chikungunya, and can include fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis. In severe cases, Zika can cause neurological complications such as Guillain-Barre syndrome and microcephaly in newborn babies.
Pregnant Women and Travelers Advised to Take Precautions
Pregnant women are at risk of giving birth to babies with microcephaly, a birth defect that causes babies to be born with small heads and brains. Travelers to Thailand are advised to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, such as wearing long sleeves and pants, using insect repellent, and staying in air-conditioned accommodations as much as possible.
Thailand Taking Action to Control Outbreak
The Thai government is taking steps to control the outbreak, including spraying insecticides, distributing mosquito nets, and educating the public about the virus. The government has also set up a hotline for people to report cases of Zika. As of August 2023, there have been over 1,000 confirmed cases of Zika in Thailand.
No Specific Treatment for Zika
There is no specific treatment for Zika, but symptoms can be treated with pain relievers and fever reducers. There is also no vaccine for Zika, but researchers are working to develop one.
